I thought it might be a fun idea to start posting about Products I Love. I am certainly no beauty expert, but as a girl, I love trying products to find what works best for me.

Yesterday while at Target, I decided it was time to get a new mascara. I have blonde lashes and kind of feel naked without any mascara. I typically use L'Oreal Voluminous...and voluminous it is, however it often bring lots of clumps and stiff lashes. I decided to try a new brand.

Voila....Covergirl Lash Blast (the orange tube, voluminous, black). I am in love. The wand. Oh the wand. It is so cool and different, and I love how it is like a brush for my eyelashes. The best part, no clumps and they actually feel nourished as well and darkened/emphasized. So there it is. Have any of you tried it before?

Reclaimed Wood

I have been loving reclaimed wood lately. I love the rustic, natural feel and the wide planks. I love it as a flooring option, and also love it used as tabletops, headboards and beyond. I also love that it can go with a lot of different design styles. Here is some inspiration.

C. Wonder

I'm not sure if any of you have heard of C. Wonder, but allow me to introduce you if not. It is a spinoff store/company from Tory Burch (apparantly opened by her ex). Anyways, there are a few stores- one in Soho, a few in the NYC suburbs. The style is obviously a spin on funky prep, bright colors and geometric designs. They carry homewares, jewelry, clothing, luggage and more. Here are a few of my favorite homewares:

If you are near the area, I'm jealous that you get to go visit a store, because I think the store itself looks like a ton of fun! ....this summer I can go once we are Manhattan-bound....

Winter Magic

Time is flying by, and my computer is still broken. Leave it to a hectic life of 2 toddlers, holiday parties and shopping and travels, a family wedding, and a horrible bout of the stomach flu. Anyways, no excuses. I am going to be better.

I'm sure lots of you are getting tired of Christmas posts, but this post is 'inspired' by Christmas. We didn't get a tree this year because we left town so early for Derek's semester break. But I have really been loving silver and blue this year.

They are non-traditional in the sense of Christmas decorations, but tend to steer in a traditional direction when paired in home design. So here's to that icy mixture!

After a full weekend of family gatherings and delicious meals, I am inspired by tabletop. Though I did not host Thanksgiving at my home, it certainly got my wheels turning on what I might have done....mixing patterns and colors. But most of all, it made me realize that I need to add some flavor to my dishware collection (or lack thereof). First off, I am so SORRY for you readers out there....if any of you have stuck with me. My desktop computer has crashed, so I'm left to an I-Pad (which I can't load photos to or really post much) and my husbands laptop (which has been basically gone the last 3 weeks strait).

I have had lots of post ideas and DIY posts in cue. So stay tuned!

Until then, here is something to warm you up. The air is turning crisp outside and I have taken out some of my Christmas decorations and even started listening to Christmas music (don't judge!). These spaces have been yearning to cuddle up in a snuggie with a good book and hot apple cider!...and you know the common thread?....VELVET. I am loving me some velvet these days!

Gallery Walls

It's no secret that we all love gallery walls. The trick is tweaking it so that you make it your own: different frame colors and materials, mirrors, numbers/letters, silhouettes, plates, clocks, other collected objects, framed objects/art/photographs, and playing with sizes. Pretty much every client I have wants a gallery wall somewhere in their space....so even I too can get stuck in a creative rut and need some inspiration. Here are a few ideas that are beyond just the black frame-white mat....

So get inspired and get creative! See what you have around the house, draw it out on paper, and test it out. There's no time like the present!

It's almost Halloween!

I'm sure by now your neighbors all have their homes covered with spiderwebs and ghosts and pumpkins on the front porch... and perhaps you have a few decorations out yourself. I always find it tricky to not fall into the lure of the generic Target dollar-bin decorations. I have nothing against them, and have a few myself, but it is also nice to have something original in your home.

Here are a few ideas to get you out of your 'spook' style rut:

My friend Meriel demonstrated this wreath on her blog. I just LOVE how it turned out. She chose a nude/orange tulle with black ribbon; also here it is in black tulle with orange ribbon (more spooky Halloweeny).

Another idea is to create your own fall centerpiece. My boys and I went on a fall walk in our neighborhood and gathered up some vibrant leaves, pine cones, and ferns. Not bad for a completely FREE centerpiece, right?

I also love to change out the photos in my frames. At Halloween time I'll put out past Halloween costume photos and pictures of pumpkins from the pumpkin patch. It's a great trip down memory lane :)...sorry no pics because my computer is being weird...

Alternative Wallpaper

For us renters, there isn't always much we can do about our walls. Even painting a neutral color is a no-no to most landlords. Well, I was watching the Nate Berkus show the other day and he showed that you can actually use bed sheets as wallpaper. Who knew?!? Basically you 1. Clean the wall space 2. Spray the top quarter of the wall with heavy spray starch 3. Smooth on the sheet 4. Add some more starch ontop of it and tack it temporarily with a pin. 5. Complete process in sections. 6. Wait for one hour to remove pins and Voila!

I have never tried this before, but am really tempted on trying it for my entry wall. It isn't supposed to leave any damage and be easy to remove. I'm just nervous about the hems and edges. Have any of you tried or heard of this fancy trick?

Water For Elephants

Inspiration comes from all art forms...

I saw Water For Elephants a few months back and absolutely loved it! I loved the costumes, the time period, the story....it was just beautiful.

Well I stumbled upon this amazing wedding shoot based on the movie Water For Elephants from the website greenweddingshoes.com. It took my breath away. The photographer Marilyn Nakazato describes the shoot,

“It’s not necessarily trying to mock the look of the movie but rather how we imagined what the main characters, Jacob and Marlena played by Rob and Reese, and how their wedding would have been like. It’s almost as if they had collected things they found in their homes and brought them outside, set their furniture on a nearby grassy area with the trains in the background. The ceremony area was created with a wrought iron gate intertwined with moss and wood to bring a simple and rustic feel.”

Every detail is whimsical, vintage, magical and perfection!

I am also a huge SYTYCD fan and loved the Water For Elephants-inspired group dance. Breathtaking.

Terraniums

I love love terraniums these days. So much so that I bought my own. Being an apartment dweller, I love that they are a little garden in my home.

They can sit on a bookshelf, a nightstand, a larger one for a table centerpiece, or hanging in a corner. Have you also seen the bigger ones that you can stick little model people and animals in? It's a great way to show your sense of humor and quirk.

So today I swung by the local consignment shop to check out what they had. And could you believe I saw this gem! What's even better is that it was half off! A table I have been loving for a while now, I found unexpectedly and only paid $45! It made my day! (is that sad?)

Now I am just trying to figure out where to put it. I've got a living room re-do in mind but am only slowly piecing it together since I want to replace everything we currently own. In due time....

Back to Berkeley {and Reality}

We have been back for a week now and I am finally all unpacked {sad, but true, especially with 2 crazy little munchkins undoing everything I just did}. I feel like I have come back with a fresh new perspective and vigor. I have been on a massive cleaning, purging, and organizing spree. I have lots of ideas swirling in my head for my own home and other's, so stay tuned for those.

Anyhow, here's to some fresh, clean spaces that are a breath of fresh air. {Did I use the word fresh too much?....no other word describes it as perfectly!} They are all delightfully organized and clutter-free :)

Lovin' the Brick

I have always loved an exposed brick accent wall....but it has been magnified since being here in NYC. I love the loft look. I love the juxtaposition of the raw brick with something soft, just like my love of mixing vintage/antique and modern. So until I can have a brick accent wall of my own someday, here's to dreaming....

If you've ever wanted to party like you favorite Manhattan socialite, you could either head downtown to the endless party of bars and clubs—or you could throw your own and bring the downtown scene to your place. When you think of throwing your own Manhattan style party, think of bringing an ultra-modern glam factor to your décor. Think you're not glamorous enough to throw a luxurious party fitted for a Manhattan party queen? Think again with these easy party tips for throwing a party worthy of the paparazzi.

Party Layout: The key part of any successful party is how much people enjoy themselves by interacting with friends or by meeting new ones. Setting up the layout of your space to allow for mingling is very important. Use a mix of long and short tables to create areas where people can chat or for the ladies to take a break from their heels. Use tables that you already have throughout your space. Even if you don't have a lot of surfaces to use, use your furniture to create small, intimate seating arrangements. Whatever you do, don't line your walls or party perimeter with chairs; you don't want you party to resemble a high school dance.

Decorations: It's all about the lighting. Think low lights and luxurious looking décor. This doesn't mean you need to break your bank though. Use white tablecloths to cover your surfaces and accessorize with silver elements; silver candles, silver trays, napkins and plates. Save money by creating your own centerpieces. Simply take shallow silver bowls, fill the bottom with decorative stones and place different sized candles in the center. A small bowl filled with stones, water and floating candles is always a great idea too. If you're having the party outside, get out your holiday lights and string them around the area.

Hor D'oeuvres: Food can be catered or, for the frugal fashionista, it can be made at home. Remember to think of finger food and things that are easy to nibble on. People will be mingling, talking and maybe even dancing so think of things that are easy to pick up and eat. Set up food throughout the room to encourage people to walk around and not hover over one food table. Set out some of the food in the beginning of the party and keep some of it tucked away in another room. When the trays are empty, you'll have food to refill them with to keep your guests happily nibbling all night.

Drinks: Having a well-stocked bar for the party does not mean having every type of alcohol available for your guests. Pick a cocktail recipe or two and mix up a large pitcher of it, buy some box wine and put it in pretty decanters, and don't forget to have a few sodas on hand for those who don't drink.

With these easy party tips, you're bash will be the talk of the town!

Modern Anthology

One day the fam and I were out exploring Brooklyn. Brooklyn has a lot to offer- they have a nice waterfront park area and are really cleaning up the streets and have some of the best shopping too.

I had looked up a few stores I wanted to check out, one of them being Modern Anthology. It was a lot to take in. I loved everything about it and pretty much wanted to move in. It had homewares, gift items, and some mens clothing. It had lots of industrial-chic, vintage, and quirky items. I snapped a few pics to show you, but if you are in the area, you'll have to check out the rest of the goods yourself :)

New York City

Our time in New York City is flying by and sadly coming to a close. I love the buzz of the big city and there is so much inspiration around every corner....whether it's the colors at a flower stand, the sound of music playing in central park, the structure of a building and skyline, the juxtaposition of old and new, or the laughter of children playing.

I'm going to miss this place.

Sorry for the random non-design question....I have been needing to upgrade my 3 1/2 year old to a bigger car seat for a while now, but with the craziness of summer traveling, I'm going to do it when we get back to Berkeley.

So.....any of you readers have a suggestion of a bigger car seat for my son? I don't want to break the bank or anything, but of course I want him safe (and it will get used my future siblings).

Thanks for the advice!

Mid-Century Love

Lately I have really been lovin' the mid-century look. I love how simple the lines are, and how it can be fused with basically any style. The Museum of Modern Art has an interior design exhibit that features mid-century furniture and really sparked my interest. Then I also love Emily Henderson's design style on Secrets of a Stylist (HGTV) and feel like she has mastered the eclectic mid-century look. If I can't have one of several beautiful Eames chairs, than I will settle on a mid-century style coffee table or TV hutch/stand. In the meantime, enjoy the inspirations.

Summer Hiatus

I have been a MAJOR slacker in the blogging world the last few months. My family and I have been in DC and now NYC for the summer. (We are in business school remember so we have a summer internship in between the 1st and 2nd year....our stuff is all sitting in our Berkeley apartment so we are basically living out of suitcases). With all of the moving around, juggling 2 little kids mostly by myself while my husband works long hours and only having my husband's laptop available, blogging just isn't top priority or easily accessible. So, I am going to start back slowly.

I also think that I haven't been too wowed by things lately. I love the industrial look, indian block printed fabric and everything else that is hot right now, but I feel like I have seen it all before in the blogging world.

But, I was flipping through this month's Elle Decor and fell in love with a few items:

SUPER

Last week I went and got a facial at SUPER by Dr. Nicholas Perricone. I was a bit hesitant, because a facial to me is all about the spa: laying down, relaxing, getting pampered, etc... This alternate method they call a 'quickie' and you sit in a chair in the store and they perform the facial in about 30 min.

Dr. Perricone is the leader an innovator in skin care and has written several books about how what you eat affects your skin. So all of his products are based around a different fruit to enhance certain properties. He also carries some patented technology like light and sound machines.

I must say, that afterwards I saw an instant improvement in my skin. Some of my blemishes had cleared up, my skin looked brighter and felt smoother. The affordability of the facial alone is worth another visit!

Master Bedroom

Here is a glimpse of our master bedroom. Student housing doesn't allow for many changes, and it still needs work, but I am happy with it so far and I love my LOVE sign.

Tracy Anderson

I know I have blogged about trainer to the stars, Tracy Anderson, but I just love her and want to again. Her method is all based around dance inspired moves and using your own body weight to create a lean physique. Gwyneth Paltrow, Courtney Cox, Madonna, J. Lo, and Nicole Richie are just a few of the celebrities who swear by Anderson's method. I recently worked out in my living room to her Cardio Dance DVD, and it dawned on me: I'll be in NYC for a month this summer, where she has a studio. So, I called up the studio to ask about taking a class or two or three. Well, apparantly you have to be a 'client' to take classes, and to be a 'client' you need to purchase 10 sessions which is well over a thousand dollars. That's not exactly in our business school budget, so for now I'll just have to keep watching her webisodes and DVDs.

If you haven't tried it yet, you must. She's got great music, new and different moves, and a body you wish you could achieve :)

Floral Print

Warm weather, sunny skies and cherry blossoms blooming....I am more than excited for spring. And with this season I have been loving all things floral. Whether it's a pattern on dishes, a rug, or a summer dress I just can't see to get enough. I have never been a huge fan of the novelty print, however if paired with stripes (think JCrew) it can understate the print and turn very fresh and casual.

Inspired by Nature

This morning I went on a run with some girlfriends in the beautiful Berkeley Hills. I had been wanting to run this particular trail (Strawberry Canyon Trail) and was excited to learn that they were planning to do just that. It was absolutely beautiful! We went early in the morning, before it got too busy and the morning dew was still fresh on the ground.

It was so green and full of lush vegetation...lots of moss-covered trees, rock walls, soaring red woods, all while following a running creek. Oh, and don't forget the gorgeous views of San Francisco and the Bay which never gets old. It was such an inspiring atmotphere and left me wanting to create something beautiful! I feel so thankful to be living in such a beautiful area! ...now if only I could do that run every morning...

So here's to getting out and exploring the world around you....it will lift your spirits and inspire you to create amazing things!

Navigating Through Life

Last Sunday I mentioned I was putting on an event for my church. It is primarily for the girls ages 12-18 and their parents to get them excited for the new year and talk about the different programs they'll be involved in. Each year, a new theme is introduced, and this year I chose to focus on Navigating Through Life. It was a fun theme to decorate for and it turned out to be a success :) Of course, my budget was basically nothing, so most everything was borrowed from different church members. I used a lot of old maps as table coverings and antique nautical devices for centerpieces.

Some of you may know my obsession with maps. I just love them. I love them framed, I love them as a mural/ wallpaper, I love them as globes; I love the interest, I love the latitude and longitude lines, I love that they are a conversation piece. I personally think they look best in a library, an office, or a child's room.

This Sunday, I am holding an event for my church youth girls group and their parents....it's all about welcoming the new 12 year girls into the program. My inspiration for the evening is maps. amidst the craziness, I'll try to remember to show you some pics of the night. I'm excited!

The Four Poster

I am obsessed with the four poster bed. For the longest time, I was mad over a chic upholstered headboard but that has now come and gone. Now it's all about the the four poster. I personally love the modern straight line style that you can find at Crate and Barrell, Thom Felicia for Vanguard, Room & Board and Anthropologie just to name a few. Enjoy the pics. They make me want to curl up in bed with all this rainy weather we are getting!

High Gloss Magazine

Hooray for another fabulous online magazine...High Gloss! I just finished scouring the pages, and I must say, that this is my favorite online design magazine yet! I loved the features, loved the overall layout, and left truly inspired.

I liked some of the celebrity features, like what is in Chelsea Handlers travel bag and Louise Roe's jet style. It also had several new, fresh and stylish interiors...I specifically liked the one of popular blogger Jamie Meares from I Suwannee (love the colorful painting!)

as well as Tia Zolden's home...it makes me want to decorate for spring!!

Inspired By....Country Strong.

Last night I went with a group of girlfriends to see "Country Strong" for my birthday. I LOVED IT! I had heard mixed reviews, but hoped for the best....and the best is what I got. It is an emotional rollercoaster with great music and a great cast!

So today after listening to my favorite song from the movie "Give Into Me" sung by Leighton Meester and Garrett Hedlund, I am inspired by all things country. Enjoy the video clip and country interiors!

New Year, Resolutions, and Clean Spaces

With the New Year upon us, one can't help but think "what can I do better this year"? Whether it's learning a new skill or getting more involved in the community .... this blog is about interiors... and I have one resolution that fits under that category. Simply put, I would like to be better organized. With this comes a couple of things:

Purge. I need to get rid of things I haven't used in the past year....clothes, cheap McDonalds kid's toys, tattered sheets or pillows, etc...

If I am committed to a particular item, I need to store it away properly with other like items....not just on a shelf in a closet thinking I 'might use it' soon.

I need to get better storage boxes. I am thrifty, so I'll often use boxes I already have, but let's be honest, it doesn't get me excited to put something away in a Huggies diaper box. I like to open a closet and see something a little nicer. Much more motivating.

Declutter. Take unnecessary items out from the visible eye. It is eventually going to creep back in there, so you might as well move the Eiffel Tower statue given to you by your in-laws that has no aesthetic appeal.

I have a confession. I love chick-lit books. They are fun, a quick-read, and a dreamy escape from reality. I love Lauren Weisberger and Emily Giffin and all those girls. I just finished I Heart New York by Lindsey Kelk. It was great. If you want to get out of the reading slump this will help! It was a great holiday read. Enjoy!

Chesterfield Sofa

HAPPY 2011 everybody! I hope you were all able to ring in the new year with family, friends, and lots of fun! We went to a minute-to-win-it party again this year- and it is ALWAYS a good time! (and a double bounus that we didnt have either kid with us!)

Lately I have been both busy and lacking inspiration, so today I am posting in response to a friends question. She recently bought a beautiful new house, and they have this living room/front room that she needs help with. She has bought two beautiful chesterfield sofas that right now are facing eachother pushed all the way against the walls. There is probably about 7-8 feet between the sofas. A catch to the room...the far wall has double doors to go out to the outdoor patio/fireplace space and it gets used quite a bit. So there must be a flow to the room.

A couple of options:

1. Place a console behind the sofa poushed back to the front window....this will create interest to the room and depth as well as functionality (surface area for drinks). I would put two lamps, picture frames, books or other fun design elements.

2. Instead of one big coffee table, which will blog the flow to the outside, split them up. Two square table off balanced would be functional as well as stylish. I'm thinking nothing too heavy. Simple thin legs and either a thin wooden top or glass.

3. The high arms present a bit of an akward dilemna with side tables. If you have a really large space with tall ceilings, you could be creative and use something like a wine barrell or stool that will match the height of the arms (or close to it). Otherwise, you might not really need a side table. Fill the space with something else, like a cool magazine rack, a floor lamps, a basket of blankets (since it's right by the outdoor patio space).

4. It would be great to 'bring the outdoors in' in this space and play with different materials- wood, linen, metals, etc. I also love the garen (Palmers) stools. In the entryway corner, my friend is going to put a chair, so next to the chair it would be perfect to have one of these stools as a side table....or next to one of the sofas.

5. Definitely a big beautiful rug with a pattern to tie the space in.

Stocking Round-up

We are heading out of town next week to go to my parents home for 10 days at Thanksgiving....I couldn't be more excited! I just love being on the East Coast during the holiday season. Then we will be back in Berkeley for about 2 weeks, then off to Southern California for up to a month :) I'm telling you all this so that you can understand why I am going to start decorating for Christmas next week. Christmas has my favorite holiday decorations, and I just love making my home feel like a magical wonderland! I even started listening to Christmas music. Normally I have a rule (and my husband has the rule for me) no Christmas music and no decorations until after Thanksgiving. But with all of our traveling on the horizon, I want to squeeze out every ounce of this holiday season.

So today, I want to do a Christmas stocking round-up. I love Christmas stockings and love fireplaces and mantles to hang them on. We had a fireplace in our first apartment, but never since. So here's to Santa's chimney :)

Living in student housing is definitely not the most glamorous place to live! Not to mention living on a student budget. But, it is my home. So over the next few posts, I am going to share some of that space with you. Today I'm presenting my family room. It's where we hang out the most. We were going to get ride of the love seat and add a chair....but we found that we really use that extra seating. That'll be one of the first projects once my husband completes his MBA and we move into a new place. This room is filled with simple modern design, bold and graphic patterns, personal photos, kid-friendly space and items, all with a touch of glam.

We have had the sofas and side table pretty much since we were first married. Other things in the room have been rotated in and out.

I have been slowly fading out of browns and warm colors, and into black and white and yellow. The lamp was from Z gallerie and was originally bronze with a brown shade. I spray painted the base in a high-gloss white, added some inexpensive white fabric and black ribbon for trim.

The rug and throw are from Ikea. My friend helped me make the chevron pillow and thomas paul canary pillow ( I bought the fabric but am still lacking a sewing machine). The black and white pillow I bought off etsy.

My amazingly talented brother in law made the painting for me one year as a Christmas present....and it is pretty much the inspiration for the room. The butterfly print is from etsy.

As always, it is a work in progress :)

Rustic Charm

With it being November (where has the time gone?!?) I am really feeling the coziness of the season. I am currently loving all things rustic, warm and nature-inspired...think Ralph Lauren, Restoration Hardware, vintage finds, worn leather chairs.... This doesn't necessarily mean turning your home into a log cabin (although I wouldn't mind being holed up in one for a bit); You can add rustic elements to your current living scheme or just be inspired by these beauties. We all have a love/hate relationship with Ikea. While the products are not meant for longevity, they are stylish, affordable, and work great in a pinch. I went the other day to get a few random things for my home, and had to snap some pictures of some noteworthy products and displays.

Love this room...love that clock bookshelf! I'm always looking for new places to store/display books! Love the pops of color and of course love the rug (since I have it!)

This is not typical Ikea style....it looks more expensive and traditional. I'm digging it though...love the persian-style rug and the library feel.

Love this glass front cabinet and the neutral color....sort of a muddy grey. They have it in other colors as well.

There were rows of old doors, tubs, mantles, lighting, etc... Definitely a place I'll visit every once in a while in case something extraordinary happens by.

Lauren Prince was the lucky giveaway winner. She is moving out of her college apartment into a young and working adult apartment with a friend in D.C. Lauren describes her style as bold and colorful, and likes graphic designs. She has an orange velvet couch from her parents, and a black TV stand and black square kitchen table. She wants to be budget conscious, but doesn't want that to restrict her from missing out on a fabulous piece to build upon and have in her collection. She also likes to entertain so wanted some extra seating (hence 2 Bartoia chairs...they don't take up much space and the eye goes through them like the lucite table to make the space feel more open).

I was inspired by her couch- loved the bold color, the texture and thought the lines would work well with both modern and some mid-century inspired pieces. I found a bold rug to build the room around. Lauren was also smart to suggest a grey wall, which I of course completely agreed with.

A decorating discussion with a friend the other day leads me to this question... Which style fits you?

Do you prefer more simple, perhaps tailored, matching design where everything has a place a purpose and is clean?

Or do you prefer eclectic design, where things don't necessarily match but they go together...different styles fused into one room..."anthropologie-esque"?

I personally am a mix of both. In master bedrooms, I like symmetry and clean lines and a simple color palette. Bathrooms I feel the same. But in all other rooms I like to mix it up...kids rooms, living rooms etc.... it is fun to play with pattern, color, old and new, and quirky unexpected items.

La Jolla shops

We are moving in a month, and I have made a list of all my favorite things to do in the area...plus more. I am hoping to get to them all one more time before we say good-bye.

One of those places is La Jolla. It is incredibly overcrowded in the summertime, but what are you gonna do? It is crowded everywhere in Southern California in the summertime.

Thanks to the direction of Caitlin Creer Interiors, I popped in a few new decor stores (Etceteras and Girard Avenue Collection). They had lots of great finds! A bit overpriced (especially because you can get antiques for way cheaper near my hometown in MD) but lots of fun to browse!

LOVE the train station posters....these are of our very own San Fran (was our own and will be again in a month) and San Diego surf spots. One day I will reproduce it myself....

I have yet to see the movie, but I thought this was pretty funny and am curious to see where in the movie the store (Seaside Home) shows up.

Who doesn't love a good set of stripes? In fashion, I'm always drawn to a good stripe...whether it's a shirt or shoes or skirt or whatever.

Same thing in interiors....ticking stripe, bold stripe. I'm definitely a 2 color (not usually a fan or multiple colors unless its in a mexican style rug/mat). Bold or subtle, I can always find a use for a good stripe.

Coastal Living Seawatch Idea House

This wallcovering featured in Country Living is a beautiful and bold way to display ticking. It fits perfect with the colonial style of the room. It also looks great on sofas and bedding.....PB has a great, standard ticking fabric.

Such a cheery bathroom....the vertical stripes continued onto the ceiling makes the room feel much taller! (material girls blog). Adding something bold like stripes in a bathroom add spice to the home without having to paint a much larger space.

I personally love wide horizontal, two-toned stripes. They are simple to do and can be subtle or bold, whichever works better for you and your space.

9 By Design

So I know it's already 2 episodes in, but I have to mention my love for 9 By Design. My husband and I sat down to watch it, and we both love it! We love Cortney and Robert and their 7 ADORABLE kids! Having a kid (and another on the way) we really admire laid back parents who just love life and find the joy in kids. Not to mention their amazing design aesthetic and desire to find original and unique items to outfit their homes.

And is it just me, or did any of you not realize that they wrote Downtown Chic? I've been flipping through it's pages when I'm out and dying to buy it but just haven't gotten around to it....it's definitely next on my list now!

What got you into sewing? Did you take any formal classes?

I just always wanted new and cute things for my home, and on a tight budget I figured I could make those things I wanted. I did not take any classes. My husband bought me a sewing machine and I taught myself. I did learn lots of fun good tricks from friends though.

What inspires you?

I am inspired by fabric. I know that sounds dorky, but I could spend hours in a fabric store thinking of things to make. I also get inspired by antiques. I love going to estate sales, antique shops and garage sales.

Any tips for those without the talent to sew in staying creative?

Make whatever inspires you. If it makes you happy, then it is worth it.

What is your favorite thing about what you do?

Seeing people smile and get excited about the things I make.

Last but not least, what is your favorite home your house?

I love my upstairs loft. It is where my family likes to hang out and where I sew.

I can't wait for this beauty to arrive

I have long been a lover of all things Eames, but not necessarily the price tag that comes with it. I love the whimsical yet simple and modern style. Caitlin over at caitlincreer.com found an Eames rocker chair knockoff for an affordable $100! I have wanted this chair, or something like it, for over a year now so I jumped at the opportunity! I am all for supporting the original designer, but with business school debt looming in our near future, I think I'm justified in getting the knockoff.

It is a smaller size (as is most modern and European inspired furniture) so I'm still deciding where to put it once it comes...next to the couch for extra seating, a reading nook, or in the nursery? So for now, here are some inspiring photos:

Hawaiian Influence

In honor of a recent family to Hawaii, I was inspired to share with you my idea of a perfect Hawaiian Home.

First of all, it would be a one story open-air home (right on the beach of course). High ceilings, a neutral color palette with salmon/coral accents, lots of teak and bamboo, and white linen drapery. Furniture and decor accents would be a mixture of modern, simple lines and asian influences. My old job at Hillsdale Home specializes in selling chinese, indian, and indonesian antiques such as buddah heads, carved wood panels, and other asian casegoods and artifacts.

Trying to find inspiring images of what I am talking about is really difficult! So here's what I've been able to round up. Enjoy!

not quite my vision (imagine dark floors, dark furniture, and a low-to-the-ground bed)...but you get the picture of the yummy white linen drapes and airy bedding!

Ways to display your kids' artwork

As a mother of a toddler, and another on its way, I hate throwing away my child's artwork so I end up saving it in a folder. I also try to think of creative ways to display it (besides the old adage of taping it to the refrigerator). Here are two things I've come up with:

East Coast Charm meets CA coll

In the latest issue of Traditional Home, there is a feature on a beautiful Redondo Beach, CA home. To me, especially from the outside, it is a perfect blend of the East Coast charm (which I miss terribly here in Southern CA) with the California beach climate. Classic elegance meets easy living with linen fabric, simple decorating, and a neutral color palette.

Mix-matching paints and woods keeps it casual: love the white kitchen cabinets with pale blue island and black table. And of course the Circa Lighting industrial pendant lamp is a fave!

Nice open spaces and square dining table allows for a casual feel and easy conversation.

Round Up: Laundry Rooms

While blog hopping on vacation in Hawaii (inspiration from that to come....) I came across this laundry room photo on 6th Street Design School. I love everything about it- the sand color, the laundry definition (and font to match websters dictionary) and the industrial light hanging from the ceiling. The room itself is a serene getaway from the eclectic mix of styles and prints throughout the rest of the house.

Dreaming in Lucite

I have loved lucite since the introduction of the Ghost Chair by the brilliant Phillipe Starke back in 2002. Since then, the craze has only gotten bigger. You can find more variety and price points now more than ever in that amazing material. Whether it's large furniture items or table accessories, lucite is a great decorating tool, especially in modern or smaller spaces.

Serge de Troyer (found at Tonic Home) has crafted extremely creative uses for lucite furniture: a chest, bench, and lounge chair.

Online Magazines

Online inspiration is becoming more and more in demand. While the web-boom is a success for many, I do shed a tear for the slow disappearance of home magazines. However, the publishing industry will not leave us empty-handed.....ala Lonny Magazine and Nesting Newbies...two hip and gorgeous and inspiring online magazines. Oh how I wish I could flip the pages by hang and tear them our for my inspiration board, these two magazines have wowed me (along with thousands of others!) So I urge you to visit Lonny Magazine and Nesting Newbies for a little eye candy and delight. Beyond these two recent publications, there is the online version of pretty much any printed design magazine. So even if you can't go out and buy the hard copies, you are never left out of the loop!

Nesting Newbies provides more insight to crafts, food and entertaining....and of course a bit of beautiful interiors.

Lonny Magazine is a true Domino. It has fabulous rooms, designer tips and interviews, the latest hot ticket items in home decor, and style inspiration for everyone! I am an avid reader, and find myself constantly flipping its pages.

Honey Interiors

Honey Interiors is a design firm that I have recently discovered and am dying over. Tamara Kaye-Honey, originally from Nova Scotia, is inspired by color, pattern, modern and whimsical designs. She mixes new with vintage, and low and high end furniture to creature chic and fun interiors.

Storage and Organization

So the new year also sometimes gives me the itch to reorganize and declutter. Unfortunately, a lot of it is behind doors or spaces guests don't really see, but it's there and you have to look at it. I've been keeping a list of some great storage and organization ideas and products. Some more pricey, some dirt cheap. But either way, it sure makes organizing more fun if you have some new, cute things to help you out!

IKEA

Ikea is a great resource for EVERYTHING....but especially the little things like organizing tools that don't get a ton of wear and tear. They have excellent storage boxes that would look cute exposed- metal, printed fabric, retro, or woven baskets- we all have a need for more boxes!

They also have this clever filing cabinet. I love the metal front pull down door!

Or you could always spray paint or wallpaper the standard filing cabinet from walmart to suit your room.

CONTAINER STORE

...needs no introduction. Everything there is fabulous and I'd love to get my hands on one of those Elf closet systems! ...someday when I have a home I can do things with.

Kitchen counter clutter is a huge problem in our house. We have this bowl that sits on the counter....a decorative bowl...that gets used as a junk bowl. So we have a junk drawer and a junk bowl, which spills over into a piler (or two) of mail and things to file. Before we can have a nice little mud room area with maybe a desk or something less exposed, I am on a search to find a great wall mail/letter organizer.

Ballard Designs has some similar wall pockets, but more 'fancy'. And a great desk organizer for those with more 'desk'/counter space.

I am loving wire baskets for closet storage. Walmart sells them at the most affordable price.

If you are like our house, we always need some clever and attractive storage solutions to hide toys and kid clutter. The first is a storage 'side table' with one side chalkboard by Jennifer DeLonge. The next is the cute Noah Owl Box by Mod Mom furniture. The last, Via Toy Boxes, doesn't hide clutter, but helps organize and uses the under the bed space very efficiently!

The New Year always seems to encourage me to clean, reorganize, and redecorate. While I'd love to always redecorate (and I mean really redecorate) I always look forward to the new spring lines that furniture stores start coming out with. ABC Carpet & Home

Earlier this month my husband and I were able to travel back East for a quick weekend getaway. We hit up Boston, NYC, and D.C. (my hometown). While in NYC, I made it a point to stop in and oogle over all things beautiful at ABC Carpet & Home. It is 9 floors of amazing home decor....and there is something in there for everyone! Whether you are looking for dishes or textiles, modern or traditional you'll find it (at a hefty pricetag nonetheless). Unfortunately I didn't snap any photos, probably because I was too busy gawking and exploring. Here area a few inspiring photos I took off google search, but they do not do the store justice.

Man Shops Globe

If you haven't seen Man Shops Globe on the Sunday Channel, then you are missing out! Keith Johnson, buyer at large for Anthropologie, travels the world in hopes to find unique and one-of-a-kind pieces (homegoods not clothing) to furnish and distribute in Anthropologie's stores. It is the absolute dream job....traveling the world, visiting off-the-beaten-path decor shops and antique markets, being inspired by the unexpected.

Each episode is focused on a different country. There's India, Belgium, UK, France, South Africa, Turkey, Tunisia and Argentina. It is a great way to travel the world through his eyes, and see what each country offers in beauty and creativity.

One week Keith went to the UK and gave us a peek into the fabulous Blakes Hotel. It is a hotel to the likes of Lady Gaga, and if I had the money I'd stay there too! Each suite is decorated differently by the owner and designer, Anouska Hempel, a very eccentric lady! You are literally transported into a different world in each of her rooms, which is all thought through so carefully down to the nightstand nick-nacks. Here is a taste of a few of the rooms:

Renting? ... Make the best of what you have :)

So I don't think anybody is really happy with renting. We have been renters for the past 5 years (well more if you include college) and while it hasn't been awful, of course we'd rather own. When you own a home you get to put your stamp on it to reflect your style and personality. If you hate the floors, cabinets, walls, light fixtures you just rip them out and change them. When you rent, even getting a paint job approved is impossible.

So here's to making your house a home....for the time being.

We moved into a new townhome about 2 months ago and there were two areas I really wanted to atleast somewhat decorate right away.

First, the built-in entertainment center aka 'eyesore'. Lots of shelves means lots of pictures and other display items. Luckily I'm more of a pack rat when it comes to home accessories, so the only thing I bought was the 'wallpaper' background to add some interest in tie in all the colors. I'm drawn to a more eclectic style. While this isn't my 'dream bookcase display' (being on a budget and all) I used what I had and as Tim Gunn would say "made it work!"

Second was the upstairs loft. It is a big open space where we would put a play area and an office space. I was inspired by this photo because of the already white walls, the great rug, and the pops of color.

I added just a few items to what I already had. I made a framed ABC poster (but don't look too closely...the Q is missing....oops!), bought the two giant paper clips from TJMaxx and added wall hanging hooks to them, and bought the rug from west elm.

Instead of clogging the space with more bookshelves, I used the ledge at the top of the stairs as one instead.

Other ideas to making a house a home is adding curtains, area rugs, and painting/altering furniture to make it your own.

Dixie Chick singer Emily Robison's home featured in Metropolitan Home

She owns the seventh floor of an industrial building in San Antonio....it used to be a candy factory...how cool is that? Loved how she kept all the same architectural elements and integrated a clean, modern asthetic to emphasize that.

If you love the look of vintage industrial and live on the East Coast, check out City Foundry. I've never been but plan to on my next trip....doesn't it just look like heaven? Floor to ceiling of lights, chairs, desks, and more.

But if you are on the West Coast, there is a great store on Cedros Ave in Solano Beach called SoLo that has an awesome industrial design section (among other goodies).

Chandeliers

I love chandeliers. I'm not talking about the ornate over top kind you would find in a hotel lobby (although those are pretty fabulous!) but light fixtures to hang in your entry or over your kitchen table. As a rule of thumb, most chandeliers should hang 30-34" above the dining table (or kitchen counter) and be about 1/3 the length of the table. In an entryway, it depends on your ceiling height, but generally no more than 1/3 the way down or center it with an over-the-door-window if you have one. But overall, you are the one living with it, so place it where you feel comfortable and think looks good.

Lighting is always important and adds warmth and vibrance to the room. But some of my favorites below and more works of art.
